Osteopathy

Manual Osteopaths draw on scientific research to assess and treat; therapists utilize a variety of techniques to facilitate healing.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) modalities include acupuncture, cupping therapy, gua sha, and moxibustion. Acupuncture involves the precise placement of needles to stimulate Qi (life force energy). TCM Cupping therapy utilizes glass and non-glass suction cups to stimulate the flow of Qi (life force energy) and blood within the body. According to TCM principles, the suction created by the cups helps open up the body's meridians, promoting better energy circulation and resolving blockages to relieve tension. Gua sha involves applying gentle pressure while scraping the skin, typically using a tool made of jade, horn, or other materials. The scraping action helps release stagnated Qi and blood from the body's tissues, addressing issues such as muscle tension, pain, and inflammation. In TCM, this method is believed also to help expel pathogenic factors and enhance the body's natural healing abilities. Practitioners use moxibustion for improved warmth and circulation within the body by burning an herb called mugwort on specific acupuncture points and areas of the body. These TCM modalities work in harmony to restore balance and promote overall health.

Reiki is a holistic healing practice that addresses the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and spirit. It is based on the belief that there is a universal life force energy that flows through all living beings, and when this energy becomes blocked or unbalanced, it can lead to physical, emotional, and spiritual imbalances. By using gentle touch or non-touch techniques, Reiki practitioners seek to channel and balance this energy, allowing it to flow freely through the body and promoting overall well-being. Reiki is often used in conjunction with other holistic therapies, such as meditation, yoga, and acupuncture, to help individuals achieve a sense of balance and harmony in their lives. It is not intended to replace conventional medical treatment, but rather to complement it by promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and supporting the body's natural healing processes.

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach to evaluating and enhancing the craniosacral system (CSS), which is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. CST is a complementary treatment that releases tensions deep in the body to help reduce pain, relieve dysfunction, and improve whole-body health and performance. The CSS has the ability to influence every system in the body, such as the musculoskeletal, neurological, immune, digestive, endocrine, etc. Palpation of the CSS allows detection and release of core issues so that the treatment focuses on the cause of dysfunction rather than symptoms. The therapist acts as a therapeutic facilitator, using the least amount of pressure and influence necessary to support the person’s self-empowerment and healing process with compassion and empathy. By facilitating the body's natural and innate healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive healthcare measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease.

How Can CranioSacral Therapy Help?
Because of its ability to influence numerous systems in the body CST is effective as a complementary therapy to help reduce pain, dysfunction and/or symptoms associated with a number of conditions including:

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hearing Disorder (ADHD), Anxiety, Arthritis, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Back and Neck Pain, Birth Trauma, Brain and Spinal Injuries, Brain Fog, Central Nervous System Disorders, Chronic Fatigue, Chronic Pain, Colic, Concussions, Depression, Dyslexia, Emotional Difficulties, Fibromyalgia, Grief, Headaches and Migraines, Heart Palpitations, Insomnia, Immune Disorders, Learning Disabilities, Motor-Coordination Impairments, Neurovascular Disorders, Orthopedic Injuries and Dysfunctions, Parkinson's Disease, Pelvic Pain, Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction (POCD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Processing Disorders, Scoliosis, Stress, Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJD), Tension, and Trauma

Growing up I was an avid basketball player, I could always be found shooting hoops, lifting in the gym or running on the track. My identity revolved around being an athlete. In high school I suffered devastating injuries to both of my knees. At the time these injuries felt like a death of my former self, now I realize it was the catalyst to discovering my passion for healing the body.

I worked as a Personal Fitness Trainer for six years before deciding to go back to school to study Massage Therapy. I immediately fell in love with massage. The body is so intriguing and I am fascinated by client’s responses to various treatments and modalities.

I am a ferocious learner with a desire to continue to understand the latest research in soft tissue treatments, pain science, and orthopedic assessments. Most recently I completed my Manual Osteopathic training, it is an honour to share my passion with all those who enter my treatment room.

My own personal growth as a manual therapist has spanned nearly 20 years. I started out in massage therapy, then delved into Upledger CranioSacral Therapy which I have been practicing since 2009. The vast healing potential of CranioSacral Therapy is what drew me to practice body work in the first place. After conventional medical care, physiotherapy and chiropractic treatment did not alleviate the symptoms I was experiencing following numerous concussions, a broken neck and other injuries, mainly from contact sports, it was CranioSacral Therapy which helped restore my health. The “magic” which I experienced from such a gentle, relaxing, therapeutic modality was immediate and lasting, with each treatment peeling away layers of dysfunction.

Being able to provide similar results for my own clients is incredibly rewarding, and my understanding of how it works has transformed CranioSacral Therapy from “magic” to applied science, where I’m facilitating the release of often deeply held physical restrictions and supporting the body’s own regenerative functions. By also therapeutically holding space and treating the whole person, not just their symptoms, I am able to address the unique nature of an individual’s patterns. Debilitating symptoms from various injuries and conditions can be resolved in this way, even ones that people have been living with for years.

In several months I will also start offering manual osteopathic treatments, as I am currently completing the final semester of my 4 year diploma program from the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy. Classical osteopathy is a principles based approach to determining the causes of mechanical and physiological dysfunction, then treating them to restore the body’s ability to self-heal and self-regulate. What drew me to osteopathy was seeing the tremendous results of this approach first-hand, as well as how it would offer me a unique method of addressing complex structural compensation issues. When the body’s ability to compensate for the wear and tear we put on it becomes compromised from injuries, repetitive strain, or functional changes from aging and disease it can lead to persistent pain and other symptoms affecting muscles, fascia, joint mobility, as well as the cardiovascular, nervous, digestive, and endocrine systems (among others). Osteopathy is particularly adept at treating such issues. I am excited to soon be able to share this in my practice.
